Wednesday 31st December – Walks – Sixt village, Sixt Cirque and La Chevriere****Sunny

Another leisurely start to the day with the last two pieces of fudge from Elaine’s stocking with cuppa while reading in bed:) The scenery from our window is just beautiful with snow covered trees and chalets:) The river runs just below where we are parked. We walked into Sixt village after breakfast and visited Mag’s favourite shop, full of typical traditional savoire bits and pieces. After buying a couple of pieces and some bread and cake from Tiffanies we returned to the van and drove up the road to the Cirque. We have walked here before but it is always beautiful and for our second visit running there were avalanches cracking, banging and echoing round the mountains. There were a few walkers and cross country skiers about and some ponies ready to give rides to the kids. There is also a luge up there where people can sledge down the hill. There were a group of Italians with a lovely black Labrador having great fun. We walked the same path as last year but it was blocked by a sign saying avalanche so we walked back and up towards the small village which was lovely. We had our picnic near the entrance, again clearing 18” of snow from the bench and table before sitting down. Returned to the van and drove away and back to La Chevriere. We were here last week when there was no snow and enjoyed Lac Vallon (now completely frozen and snow covered) and the walk up to the cascade (you wouldn’t want to do that now with all this snow!). We have parked up near the ski station which is up and running this time and hope to ski tomorrow. We walked up past the lifts towards a farm with a sheepdog hiding in the wood pile from its owner calling it frantically:) We decided to walk down the slope to the drag lifts and up the small learner slopes into the village. Back to the van for a chilli and French bread tea. Don’t think we will be awake for the new year!
